Protecting Survivors, Changing the System.

At Northwestern, Lucy took solace in organizing to protect fellow students from sexual violence and fighting the subsequent institutional barriers in place preventing student survivors from attaining justice. As a survivor who sought justice for her own sexual assault through her university’s Title IX process, Lucy learned the ins and outs of Title IX and its immense shortcomings in equitable protection of survivors. Working with Northwestern’s Sexual Health and Assault Peer Educators (SHAPE) as well as individual students interpersonally, Lucy became a resource and outspoken advocate for other student survivors as they navigated their options in seeking justice.

In summer of 2021, Lucy was trained to be a legal and medical advocate through Resilience, a Chicago-based rape crisis center which offers a wide variety of services for survivors. As an advocate, Lucy has worked in hospitals to help ensure that survivors brought into the emergency room are treated with dignity, respect, and care.
